Lynne
Cheney (Oct 11th, 2007)
During the entire week Jon did not
hide his disbelief that Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick
Cheney and a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, will
accept his invitation to come on the show. Dick Cheney is the subject
of some of the harshest criticism on the TDS. When Jon reports on
Cheney he imitates his character and voice by portraying him as an
actual incarnation of the Penguin, the aristocratic powermonger comics
supervillain from the Batman series. Recently, Cheney known love for
secrecy is the subject of a segment called "You don't know Dick". For
the special visit of Lynne, the segment had an exagerated portrayal of
Dick as a wonderful loving man. Lynne showed a sense of humor in
relation to Jon's perception of her husband by giving him as a present
a Darth Vader figure. They had the following exchange at the beginning
of the interview:
Cheney: "It's a especial present for you. It's an old family heirloom"
Jon: "Is there a microphone in it?"
Cheney: "No, but it's signed at the bottom"
Jon: "really?"
Cheney: "in invisible ink".
Jon: "It's lovely. Thank you. I'll keep that..."
Cheney:"as a nice reminder".
Jon: "Yes!"
Highlights:
Jon: "For instance, when Wolf Blitzer brought up to your husband,
things about your daughter, grand children, focusing on the family and
the issues that they have with gay marrige, when John Kerry brought it
up in the debates and you came out and said 'hey, you are not a good
man'. So I always wonder, is it appropriate to talk to you guys about
it?. Because the President of the US did go on the lawn of the White
House and said 'I want a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as
an union between a man and a woman. Why is not appropriate
to ask about it?"
Cheney: "Well I think we try to mantain...I don't quote Hillary Clinton
often, but she talked about a zone of privacy for Chelsea and I think
that even adult children deserve that zone of privacy. But on the other
hand Dick has made some of the best statements on the subject that I
know off. In the 2000 debate with Joe Liberman, when he was asked about
gay marriage, he said 'this is a free country and people ought to be
able to enter into the relationships they want. Freedom means freedom
for everyone. I think that is pretty much the bottom line.
Jon:"Could he said to the President, 'hey man, how about not going into
the lawn and saying that'. Richard Nixon was in a prime position to
open up the door of America to China, because he had been a bona fide
communist fighter. Your husband has the ear of any conservative
organization. He is a hero to them and yet he is the father of somebody
who is hurt by them."
Jon:"So you disagree vehemently with the Republicans when they say that
gay marriage should be [banned] in the Constitution?"
Cheney:"I think that the idea of an amendment opposing gay marriage is
wrong and I have said so publicly."
Jon:"All right. I appreciate that."
Jon:" You are not your husband, so it's not fair to challenge you on
things that aren't you"
Jon:"You didn't have to come and do this and I really appreciate
it...if you do see your husband, because we don't know how much time
his spends in the man size safe, please tell him that we would love to
have him on...and...no! forget that! but you, we were delighted to
have."
